Study
I am a student at UniSQ, soon to complete my Bachelor of Science with a double major in Plant Agricultural and Animal Science. This three-year degree programme has been an incredible learning opportunity. As with any new endeavour, especially when it involves starting a university degree overseas, I was nervous but excited about the people I would meet, the knowledge I would acquire, and the experiences I would have.
I have been able to put all the theory into practice by going to different laboratories, getting first-hand knowledge from my lecturers who are very passionate and knowledgeable about their topic of study/research, and going on field trips to various farms, agricultural organisations, and businesses. They have been incredibly open to explaining their operations, sharing their insights about the industry, and showcasing cutting-edge techniques being used. These experiences have also given me the chance to network, get to know the industry better, and realise how vast and diverse it is.
I will finish my studies in December and then in February 2025 I will have my graduation ceremony, where I would be officially graduated…Exciting!

Work
I am a research assistant for the canola team at Pacific Seeds. There, I contribute to the advancement of superior canola hybrids that are appropriate for all growing regions within Australia. My primary responsibilities are planting, monitoring plant growth, manually pollinating canola flowers (much like a bee) as part of the plant breeding programme, managing seed stockpiles, operating lab threshers, oil seed machines, and seed counters.
All in all, I am really happy with my current job. I have learned a lot about the canola crop and how large a company like Pacific Seeds operates. I have also enjoyed talking to plant breeders and agronomists, the pleasant work environment, and feeling like a valuable team member. I feel blessed and proud of having this job, as it relates to my studies, it has allowed me to meet wonderful people, learn interesting things, and acquire new abilities.

Live
I have been living in Toowoomba for four years (in February next year, soon to be five), since the moment I arrived I was struck by this little city and its natural beauty. Known as the “Garden City”, Toowoomba is a haven for anyone who loves the outdoors. The vibrant colours of the flowers in the Botanic Gardens and the breathtaking views from Picnic Point and Table Top are just a few of the natural wonders that have captivated my heart.

Going to the Warraba Sunflower Fields, which is about 20 minutes away from Toowoomba on the way to Warwick, was one of the things I did at the start of the year and would suggest to everyone living in Toowoomba and surrounding areas. We spent a great day with my friends, enjoying the beautiful weather, taking lots of photos and videos, and embracing the present. It was such an incredible experience.

Receiving the amazing news that I would be joining Study Toowoomba’s new student ambassador batch was another fantastic moment and undoubtedly one of the highlights of this year. This has been a fantastic chance for me to network with locals and leaders, attend significant events, engage in the community, and proudly represent Colombia in Australia while sharing my experiences as a student.

As a student ambassador, I have had the honour of participating in worthwhile events. Mayor Geoff McDonald extended an invitation to us student ambassadors to attend this year’s 75th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Parade, which was a pleasant surprise. What a wonderful way to take in such an amazing cultural display, we had VIP seats, the opportunity to meet local leaders, and the chance to spend time together as friends and ambassadors. Most importantly, we were mesmerised by the wave of flowers, joy, and colours that symbolised this parade.

Another event I had the honour of attending was the Finalists Announcement Function held in connection with October’s Business at Dusk, which was sponsored by Marshall Blacklock’s company, CDI Pest Management, a well-known pest control company founded in 2005. We had the opportunity to support the finalists for Toowoomba’s most prestigious business awards, network with industry leaders, and hear from the finalists.

Being a student ambassador has, without a doubt, been an incredible and enriching experience thus far, and for that, I am grateful to Study Toowoomba for believing in me and allowing me to join the team. I am eager to participate in future events and have more experiences. Follow me on Instagram @marimendozana for more updates.
