Student Cap Changes and What They Mean for Toowoomba
By Peter Homan – Chair, Study Toowoomba
After a challenging period for Australia’s international education sector, the federal government has announced a small but meaningful change. From 2026, the national cap on new international student enrolments will increase from 270,000 to 295,000.
While modest, this signals a shift in direction – one that offers some breathing space for education providers and regional communities alike.
For a city like Toowoomba, international students are more than enrolment numbers – they are part of our community, our economy, and our future. This policy adjustment allows us to continue planning and promoting our region as a top-tier education destination.
At Study Toowoomba, our work is guided by six key pillars that highlight why students choose to STUDY, WORK, LIVE here:
- Future-Focused Education – Our learning institutions are innovative, globally connected, and committed to preparing students for the careers of tomorrow.
- Value – Toowoomba offers a lower cost of living compared to most of Australia, allowing students to live well while studying.
- Employment Opportunities – Whether it’s part-time work during study or employment after graduation, Toowoomba offers real job pathways.
- A Supportive Environment – Students are warmly welcomed here – they’re not just learners, they’re neighbours, volunteers, and valued community members.
- Lifestyle – Toowoomba offers a safe, inclusive, and vibrant lifestyle, with beautiful parks, events, and a strong sense of belonging.
- Location – As Australia’s second-largest inland city (after Canberra), Toowoomba is a major regional hub with excellent connectivity and resources.
