Travelling twelve thousand miles to study nursing is a dream come true for Abantu Harry, 25, from Gabarone, Botswana. Harry was on hand at Wellcamp Airport to help Councillor Nancy Sommerfield launch the updated website for Study Toowoomba.

As a Student Ambassador for Study Toowoomba, Harry explains, “I was looking for a place I could feel at home, and Toowoomba has been so welcoming. When I lost my luggage on the way here the Toowoomba community looked after me. I try to return the favour by volunteering whenever I can.”

Harry works part time in aged care and has just completed her Cert III in Individual Support at TAFE. She will study for a Diploma of Nursing in 2024 and dreams of becoming a midwife.

Councillor Sommerfield, the outgoing Chair of Study Toowoomba says, “It’s great for Study Toowoomba to have a website that truly shows what we can offer educationally. International students have so much to offer our community and truly make the most of the opportunities here.”

Councillor Sommerfield says she has enjoyed her time as Chair, helping to promote Toowoomba as a centre for educational excellence as well as a safe place to study, work and live.

Cr Sommerfield will remain on the Study Toowoomba Committee as a representative of Toowoomba Regional Council, until her term ends in March 2024. Mr Peter Homan, CEO of Southern Queensland Country Tourism, was appointed Chair at the recent Study Toowoomba AGM, having been a member of the Management Committee for two years.
