2024-2025 Student Ambassador Malvin Ryan Tan from the Philippines
I am currently pursuing a Certificate IV in Cyber Security at TAFE Queensland, located in Toowoomba, Queensland’s Garden City. Having a background in computer engineering from the Philippines, my goal here is to specialise in cybersecurity and networking. TAFE’s industry[1]approved courses and practical approach to learning stood out to me as the perfect platform to hone my skills and achieve my professional goals.
Currently, I am working in the restaurant industry as a casual worker. While my primary motivation is to support my studies and needs, I’ve always had a genuine interest in cooking, food science and the hospitality industry in general, which to me is a win-win. As I progress through my studies however, I am hoping to secure an internship or a job role in the IT industry, ideally here in Toowoomba. In addition, I also plan on earning an IT certification during or shortly after my studies to boost my career prospects.

Toowoomba is an ideal match for me! It shares many similarities with my hometown, especially its beautiful, mountainous landscape where I can enjoy biking and hiking along its scenic trails. The city offers a perfect blend of urban development and nature’s beauty, with its parks that’s great for unwinding and as a running route. I also look forward to having multiple trips to op shops, where every visit feels like an exciting quest for reusable treasures!
My family back in the Philippines has been incredibly supportive of my journey abroad. The Philippines, much like Queensland, is a place of warmth, both in its tropical climate and in the people’s hospitality. It’s a country filled with hidden gems, from its stunning landscapes to its vibrant culture. Living in Toowoomba, where the weather and friendly community closely resemble home, has made the transition to life in Australia feel comforting and familiar.
