Fun Fact: Papua New Guinea was a territory under Australian Administration since 1905 and gained full independence from Australia on September 16th, 1975.

On the 21st of September the South Queensland Papua New Guinea Community based here in Toowoomba held the country’s 50th Independence Celebrations at the Good Shed on Victoria Street. The morning started off with a morning fellowship, and ended with various cultural dances from the few dance groups that travelled from Brisbane to perform. The celebrations held here made me feel closer to home seeing how there is a large community of Papua New Guineans down here who have established a life for themselves and it was also heart-warming hearing members of the local Toowoomba Community speak so fondly of their time, ties, friendships and histories made back in Papua New Guinea. A great time was had!
Toowoomba proving yet again that it is a melting pot of diverse cultures and is indeed a home to this boisterous Papua New Guinean community. The mayor and his beautiful wife graced us with their presence at this event and various Pacific Island communities were also present to show their support. With the smell of local delicacies wafting in the air, near the main stage the Papua New Guinea And Australian Flag stood side by side on mini poles, giving another timely reminder that you can come from afar or as close as Papua New Guinea and still call Australia Home and what better place to study, work and live than right here in Toowoomba!
