From Suez to Toowoomba: The Journey of Basem Adel Ahmed Aly

Apr 18, 2025 | Student Stories

In every international student’s story lies a unique blend of culture, ambition, and personal growth — and Basem Adel Ahmed Aly’s journey is no exception. Born in Japan, raised in Egypt, and now thriving in Toowoomba, Basem’s life path reflects a global outlook, academic determination, and a passion for meaningful contributions through research.

A Global Beginning

Basem was born in Japan while his father pursued his PhD, yet his roots trace back to Egypt, where he grew up in a close-knit family of five. His father, a university professor, and his mother, a schoolteacher, placed a strong emphasis on education and lifelong learning. The early influence of his father, who affectionately called him “Doctor” from high school days, sowed the seeds of Basem’s future aspirations in academia and research.

Basem’s upbringing was shaped by contrasting environments — the vibrant port city of Suez and the quiet, agricultural village of Bakhati in Menofia Governorate. From watching massive ships pass through the Suez Canal to experiencing the peaceful rhythms of farm life, he developed a deep appreciation for community, tradition, and the beauty of simple moments. These early experiences shaped his worldview and inspired a lifelong interest in culture, learning, and travel.

Choosing Toowoomba: A Leap of Faith

Driven by a desire to learn through real-world experience and cultural exchange, Basem began exploring opportunities for postgraduate study abroad. His journey led him to the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), one of the first institutions to respond to his inquiries. The warm welcome, coupled with research opportunities and the appeal of regional living, made Toowoomba the ideal destination.

“I was drawn to Toowoomba’s balance — not too big or overwhelming, yet full of charm and opportunity,” Basem explains. “It’s the perfect place to start an international journey. The gardens, the fresh air, the sense of community — it all just felt right.”

Academic Pathway and Career Development

Basem’s academic journey at UniSQ began with the English for Academic Purposes course, designed to help international students transition smoothly into higher education in Australia. With his language foundation strengthened, he progressed into a master’s degree by coursework in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, where he was introduced to the fundamentals of academic research through a major research project.

His dedication and curiosity soon opened doors. While still a student, Basem secured a casual research role at UniSQ’s Centre for Agricultural Engineering. This experience proved pivotal — not only did it provide real-world exposure to applied research, but it also helped shape the direction of his future PhD research, focusing on robotics and sensing technologies.

“It was a turning point,” Basem recalls. “Being part of real projects, working with experts in the field — it grounded my learning in reality and confirmed that research was where I belonged.”

Life in Toowoomba

Basem speaks highly of his adopted city. From study to work to daily life, Toowoomba has provided an enriching environment where he has thrived both personally and professionally.

“As a student, it’s quiet enough to focus. As a resident, it’s welcoming and full of green spaces that keep you grounded. And professionally, I’ve had access to leading research facilities and supportive mentors,” he shares.

He particularly appreciates the sense of community, the ease of access to larger hubs like Brisbane, and the affordability compared to major Australian cities. It’s a city, he says, that supports balance — something every student and professional seeks.

Inspiring Others from Egypt and Beyond

Basem actively encourages others from his home country — and around the world — to consider Toowoomba not just as a study destination, but as a place to build a life.

“I tell them: It’s not just about the degree. It’s about the people, the environment, the chance to grow in every aspect. The cost of living is manageable, the city is beautiful, and the education is top-notch,” he says.

His story serves as an authentic and compelling example for aspiring students looking for more than just academic excellence — students seeking meaningful experiences, cultural exchange, and long-term growth.

Looking Ahead

While Basem is not yet an Australian citizen or permanent resident, he looks forward to the day when he can officially call Australia home. With his contributions to research, his commitment to community, and his drive to inspire others, he has already become a valued member of the Toowoomba and UniSQ community.
